ओलिंपिक टोक्यो 2020 : नीरज चोपड़ा ने टोक्यो ओलंपिक 2020 में गोल्ड मैडल जीतकर इतिहास रच दिया है। भाला फेंक प्रतियोगिता में नीरज 87.58 मीटर लंबे थ्रो के साथ 12 खिलाड़ियों की सूची में टॉप पर रहे। नीरज ने अंकतालिका में शीर्ष पर रहते हुए फाइनल में भी प्रवेश किया है। नीरज 2008 के बाद भारत के लिए गोल्ड मेडल जीतने वाले पहले खिलाड़ी बने हैं। इससे पहले अभिनव बिंद्रा ने 2008 ओलंपिक में भारत को गोल्ड जीताया था। इसी के साथ टोक्यो ओलंपिक में भारत के मेडल की संख्या 7 हो गई है।
नीरज ने इसी के साथ भारत का एथलेटिक्स में ओलंपिक पदक जीतने का पिछले 100 साल से भी अधिक का इंतजार समाप्त कर दिया। नीरज ने स्वर्ण पदक जीतने के बाद तिरंगा लेकर मैदान का चक्कर लगाया और इसका जश्न मनाया। नीरज को ओलंपिक से पहले ही पदक का प्रबल दावेदार माना जा रहा है और इस 23 वर्षीय एथलीट ने अपेक्षानुरूप प्रदर्शन करते हुए क्वालीफिकेशन में अपने पहले प्रयास में 86.59 मीटर भाला फेंककर शीर्ष पर रहकर फाइनल में जगह बनायी थी।
फाइनल में उन्होंने पहले प्रयास में 87.03 मीटर भाला फेंका था और वह शुरू से ही पहले स्थान पर चल रहे थे। तीसरे प्रयास में वह 76.79 मीटर भाला ही फेंक पाये जबकि चौथे प्रयास में फाउल कर गये। उन्होंने छठे प्रयास में 84.24 मीटर भाला फेंका लेकिन इससे पहले उनका स्वर्ण पदक पक्का हो गया था। चेक गणराज्य के जाकुब वादलेच ने 86.67 मीटर भाला फेंककर रजत जबकि उन्हीं के देश के वितेजस्लाव वेस्ली ने 85.44 मीटर की दूरी तक भाला फेंका और कांस्य पदक हासिल किया।
भारत ने पहली बार एंटवर्प ओलंपिक 1920 में एथलेटिक्स में भाग लिया था लेकिन तब से लेकर रियो 2016 तक उसका कोई एथलीट पदक नहीं जीत पाया था।
दिग्गज मिल्खा सिंह और पीटी ऊषा क्रमश 1960 और 1984 में मामूली अंतर से चूक गये थे। अंतरराष्ट्रीय ओलंपिक समिति (आईओसी) अब भी नार्मन प्रिचार्ड के पेरिस ओलंपिक 1900 में 200 मीटर और 200 मीटर बाधा दौड़ में जीते गये पदकों को भारत के नाम पर दर्ज करता है लेकिन विभिन्न शोध तथा अंतरराष्ट्रीय एथलेटिक्स महासंघ (अब विश्व एथलेटिक्स) के अनुसार उन्होंने तब ग्रेट ब्रिटेन का प्रतिनिधित्व किया था।
